BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern exploded for seven runs in the second inning on their way to a 12-4 win over the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff on Sunday afternoon at Lady Jaguar Field.
Southern improved to 10-27 overall and 6-10 in SWAC play. Arkansas – Pine Bluff dropped to 6-33 and 2-14 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Arkansas – Pine Bluff struck first to open the game. A single, walk, wild pitch and another single would produce one run. An amazing catch in left field by McKenzie Ogden robbing Pine Bluff of a home run and then doubling off the runner at third ended the Lady Lions threat.
- Southern would respond in the second to take the lead.Anabella Valadez got down in the count 0-2, but would fight to draw a walk. Valadez would steal second and Blair Willis would double to left center to score Valadez.
- Raquel Latta would hit the ball to third that would bounce off the third baseman's glove allowing Willis to score all the way from second. Alissa Castaneda would walk to load the bases and Pine Bluff would start to unravel. Three straight errors, one by third base and two by the shortstop would add three more runs.
- Valadez and Alana Mark would single to score the final two runs of the inning, giving Southern a 7-1 lead after two.
- Pine Bluff added three runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-4. Latta would strike out the first batter of the inning but would proceed to give up a home run, walk and two singles. Kairah Williams would return to the circle to induce a fielder's choice that was ruled interference on the catcher, a strikeout and a line out to Aylani Ottley at third.
- Southern would get two runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Valadez would reach base on a wild pitch and Mark would walk. Both would advance on a wild pitch and would come around to score on a single up the middle by Willis.
- Willis got hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the sixth. Willis would come around to score on a double by Chakirrious Parker down the left field line. Castaneda would follow with a single down the right field line putting runners on the corner with one out. Asia George would send Parker home for the winning run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Southern outhit UAPB 10-5.
- The Lady Lions committed four errors while Southern had no errors.
- Southern would leave seven runners stranded and UAPB left three on base.
- Southern drew five walks and struck out eight times.
- Valadez and Willis went 2-for-3 at the plate. Valadez scored twice and had one RBI. Willis finished with three RBI and scored twice.
- Samaria Jackson went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run to lead Arkansas – Pine Bluff.
UP NEXT
The Lady Jaguars will finish out the series against Arkansas – Pine Bluff on Monday morning with a double header. The first game is slated to begin at 11 a.m. with the second game to begin at approximately 1 p.m.
