Valadez Tosses Three-Hit Shutout in 2-0 win Over Alcorn

BATON ROUGE, La. – Anabella Valadez threw a three-hit shutout Saturday afternoon to lead Southern to a 2-0 win over Alcorn at Lady Jaguar field.
 
Southern improved to 4-19 overall and 1-3 in the SWAC. Alcorn dropped to 5-15 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alcorn would get one runner on in the top of the first, but the runner would get caught stealing at second and Southern would hold them scoreless.
  • Southern would get three straight singles to open the bottom half to load the bases. Valadez would help herself out with a sacrifice fly to center to score Asia George, giving the Lady Jaguars a 1-0 lead.
  • Alcorn would get another runner on in the second, but George would dive for a line drive and double the runner off at first to end the inning.
  • Alissa Castaneda would double with two outs in the second but would be stranded there.
  • In the fifth, Alcorn would get a lead off double from Marsha Hunt. Hunt would advance to third on a single but would get thrown out at the plate after tagging up on a fly ball to George in center. The next batter would try to bunt for a hit, but Alana Mark would make a diving catch to end the Lady Braves' threat.
  • Southern would score an insurance run in the sixth. Sydney Wesley would reach base on an error by the Alcorn shortstop. Blair Willis would pinch run for Wesley and steal second. Willis would come around to score on a hit by McKenzie Ogden down the left field line.
  • Valadez would retire Alcorn in order in the seventh to secure the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Southern would outhit Alcorn, 6-3.
  • The Lady Jaguars played perfect ball in the field, while Alcorn would finish with two errors.
  • Southern would leave five runners stranded and Alcorn left two on base.
  • Southern drew no walks and struck out three times.
  • George would finish 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead Southern at the plate.
  • Marsha Hunt, Genise Wells and Sarah Kennedy would collect the hits for Alcorn.
