PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Southern University men’s track and field team ended the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship Sunday evening in fifth place, thanks in large part to a dominate performance by the field event participants.
After day one of the SWAC Championship, the results of the javelin and hammer throw accumulated a total of 22 points which put the men in second place. The overall points at the end of the meet totaled in 72 points, the field events alone produced over half of those points at 48. 
" I was very proud of how the thrower set the tone in day one by scoring 22 points," said head coach Teremine White. (Add quote about throwers getting the team off to a great start)

Freshman Keenan Villery earned his first piece of hardware this weekend in the men's javelin throw. Villery took second with a throw of 49.38 meters, recording the first 8 points for the men's team on Day 1 of the three-day meet on the Prairie View A&M campus.
Freshman Char'Vares Wilson made his way to the podium once again, by taking second in the shot put with a throw of 14.79 meters. Wilson also earned his team points by placing sixth in the discus throw with a throw of 41.73 meters. 
Junior Jeremy Bass earned his first medal in the hammer throw this weekend by setting a personal record of 52.03 meters. Bass also placed fourth in the shot put, earning a total of 13 points for the men's team.  
Junior Artis McCoy got his first trip to the podium this weekend by placing third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.13. McCoy will have one more opportunity to qualify for regionals this upcoming weekend at the Last Chance meet. This meet will be held at McNeese Track in Lake Charles, La. 
Junior Keshaun Javois got his first taste on how good it feels to make the podium. Javois finished third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:06.02.
The Jaguars will head to Lake Charles, La. for the Last Chance meet for two athletes that are capable of making regionals. Artis McCoy will be one of those athletes competing in the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash.
