Southern University baseball third baseman Tyler LaPorte earned Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors Monday, league officials announced Monday.
After starting the week with a 0 for 4 outing at Southern Miss, LaPorte, who is in his second year after transferring from BRCC, went 6 for 12 at the plate and drove in 13 runs and hit three homeruns, helping Southern record the programs first SWAC series sweep since April 2017.
LaPorte, who batted .500 in three games against UAPB, capped of a phenomenal series in dramatic fashion as Southern and UAPB traded timely hits in the series finale game.
Trailing 13-12, Malik Blaise doubled down the left field line to score Hampton Hudson to tie the game. After UAPB intentionally walked Javeyan Williams and sent third baseman Austin Toth to the mound, LaPorte sent the first pitch offering deep over the right centerfield wall for his second three-run home run of the day.
The Jaguars, off to a 3-0 start in SWAC play, will face ULM Tuesday at 4 p.m. before heading to Houston for a three-game series against Texas Southern starting Friday at 5 p.m.
