Pinkston leads Southern at McNeese State Stampede
Southern University’s Cross Country team competed at the Asics McNeese Cowboy Cross Country Stampede at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex in Lake Charles Saturday.
The event was a late addition to the schedule after a cancelation of the LSU Cross Country Invitational last week due to severe weather in the Baton Rouge area.
“I am very pleased with the way we competed here,” noted first-year coach Beau Walker. “Our group is continuing to improve with each performance and we are working hard to stay healthy and perform at our best for our Conference championships at the end of the month.”
Despite the late addition, several Jaguars turned in notable performances that garnered the attention of the conference office.
ShaNiece Pinkston, a senior form Detroit, Michigan was named SWAC Athlete of the Week with her performance. She raced to a 19th place finish in a time of 19:52.19. She led her teammates to an eighth place finish overall.
“I am very proud of ShaNiece, she has really stepped up this year as a leader and competitor," Walker said. "As a small group, the ladies have really done extremely well in the meets all season long. I expect to see great things out of all of them as the season continues to unfold.”
The men raced the 4-mile at the event with Willie Williams (21:44.51) leading the way for the Jags followed by freshmen Brandon Ramsey (23:02.60) and Devin Corbin (24:21.87).
Southern will enjoy a week off from competition before traveling to Texas next week for the Houston Baptist Invitational Oct. 11. Start time is set for 3:20 p.m.
