Prairie View, TX- The Southern University Volleyball team opened up conference play Friday, September 27 in the 2019 SWAC West Roundup on the campus of Prairie View A&M University. The Jaguars went 4-1 on the weekend, opening the tournament with their first win of the season against Alcorn State.
The Jaguars topped the Braves in their first match of the roundup, 3-0. The Jaguars were unstoppable in the first set, winning 25-7. Both teams went head-to-head in the second set as Southern was able to make a run and come out on top of Alcorn, 25-21. The Jaguars were able to hang on tight to their lead as they once again topped the Braves and took the match, 25-20. After four straight weeks of tournament non-conference tournament play, the Jaguars were able to recover and cruise to their first win of the season.
The game leaders for Southern were Brianna Hawkins (7 kills, 5 blocks, 2 assists, 9 digs), Jada Carter (7 kills, 1 ace), Holaimoana Johnson (6 kills, 3 blocks), Sameera Mohammed (3 aces, 4 assists, 12 digs) and Princess Stark (3 aces, 25 assists, 6 digs).
Southern-0, Alabama A&M-3
The Jaguars were swept in the second match of the SWAC West Roundup on Friday night by the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M.
Southern-3, Jackson State-1
On the second day of SWAC Roundup, the Jaguars faced-off with the Tigers of Jackson State. Southern was able to pull off a hard fought first set, 25-22. Delaine Fulton scored the first point by the Jaguars with a kill, followed by another kill from Xaria Taylor and an ace from Sameera Mohammed. The second set of the match came with the same intensity, but it wasn’t enough for the Jaguars as the Tigers were able to escape with the victory, 23-25. The Jaguars were able to break the tie and end the match topping the Tigers in the third and fourth sets, 25-23 and 25-18.
Jada Carter led the team in kills (15) followed by Shelby Jolly (10) and Arabella Hall (7). Sameera Mohammed and Princess Stark each had 2 aces, while Jada Carter has 1. Arabella Hall completed 7 blocks, Delaine Fulton completed 6, and Brianna Hawkins completed 4. Princess Stark recorded 39 assists and 13 digs. Sameera Mohammed also had 12 digs and Khari Woods had 8.
Southern-3, Alabama State, 2
The Jaguars were able to come out with a huge win against Alabama State Saturday night. The Jaguars cruised past the Hornet in the first set, 25-12. The Hornets had no sting in them as the Jaguars topped them in set 2, 25-21. The match got interesting when the Hornets came back to take sets 3 and 4, 19-25 and 18-25. Nevertheless, the Jaguars persevered and pulled through a tough fifth set, 16-14.
The leaders for Southern in match of the SWAC West Roundup were Shelby Jolly (16 kills, 2 blocks), Jada Carter (15 kills, 2 aces, 1 block), Brianna Hawkins (1 ace, 14 digs), Princess Stark (1 ace, 40 assists, 9 digs) Arabella Hall (2 blocks, 1assist), and Sameera Mohammed (2 assists, 23 digs).
Southern-3, Mississippi Valley-1
The Jaguars topped the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley in their final game of SWAC West Roundup. The Jaguars blew past MVSU in the first set, 25-10. The Delta Devils began to fight back in set two, but it wasn’t enough to retire the Jaguars, 25-23. MVSU scratched back in the third set to steal a win from the Jaguars, 23-25. The Jaguars answered with a 25-19 victory in set four to take the match. The Jaguars finished the weekend 4-1 in conference play.
Southern will host its home opener on Sunday, October 6 at Clifford Seymour Gym against the Texas Southern University Tigers at 5:00 p.m.
