BATON ROUGE, La. -- Southern University gave Texas Southern all they can handle as the Lady Tigers escaped Jaguar Field with a weekend sweep over the Jaguars, 8-6 (GM1), 2-1 (GM2) and 5-3 (GM3).
In game one Texas Southern jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two run homerun to left center in the top of the third.
Southern responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with one run.
TXSO retook the lead in the top of the sixth adding two runs for a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Tigers added four more runs in the top of the seventh. Undeterred Southern put a furious comeback, recording five runs in the final stanza to close the game 8-6 finishing the game with bases loaded.
In game two it was about defense and strong pitching for both aces. Both pitched a complete game.
Aubrion James allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, striking out five. Texas Southern allowed one run on five hits, striking out three, and walking no batters.
TXSO took advantage of an errant throw to third base on a stolen base attempt to score the first run of the game.
James ties the game at one, coming home on a single to second base.
With two outs remaining in the top of the seventh, Southern walked two consecutive batters and single to the outfield was all the Lady Tigers need to take game two, 2-1.
In game three Texas Southern jumped out to a three to nothing lead when Southern reached home on a fly out, to close the game 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lady Tigers put the game out of reach with two runs in the top of the seventh to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Southern added two runs but couldn't complete the comeback.
Southern is waiting on the Southwestern Athletic Conference to rule on the makeup game versus the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. As of today, Southern sits in third place in the division standings UAPB sits in fourth.
