BATON ROUGE, La – Southern took game one in convincing fashion, 11-4 but could not sustain the momentum dropping the rubber match 5-1 Saturday at Jaguars Field.
After faltering in game one Southern jumped on the Lady Tigers fast and furious opening the game with six runs in the first stanza.
Grambling answered back with three runs to cut the lead 6-3, Southern answered with a run in the bottom of the second and two runs in the bottom of the third to extend the lead, 9-3. Southern added the final two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for the final score, 11-4.
Southern’s Jaslyn Perrodin came out big for the Jags, batting 3-of-4, recording two runs, and an RBI at the leadoff spot. Six Jaguars recorded RBIs with Payton Mercardo leading the way with three. While nine batters recorded at least one hit. Kameri Mott recorded two doubles, two RBIs, and a run.
The 16 hits were the most this season. Tiara Scott got the nod in the circle fanning nine batters, allowing eight hits, and four runs in her second win of the season.
Southern could not overcome two home runs, dropping the weekend series 5-2.
Grambling recorded the first run on an RBI double to right center to take an early 1-0 lead. Jaslyn Perrodin answered back taking advantage of two errors to tie the score at 1.
Grambling regains the lead with a two-run pop over the right field wall to take a 3-1 lead. Southern answered back with an RBI single to center field to cut the lead, 3-2. The Jaguars appeared to have tied the game when Mott was caught in the rundown but was ruled to have left early ending the inning.
Grambling took the first pitch of the sixth inning over the left field wall and added another run to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
Southern next six batters were retired to end the game.
Tiara Scott recorded her eight loss of the season, allowed seven hits, four runs (three earned), and struck out one. Southern bottom of the lineup went 0-of-17.
Mott went 2-of-3 with a double and an RBI, Perrodin scored twice.
Southern will travel to Thibodaux to face Nicholls State University Lady Colonel on Wednesday, April 3 for a midweek tilt, first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
