SB: Southern drops first game of the season
LAKE CHARLES, La.| The University of Virginia scored early and often to defeat Southern University at the Cowgirl Classic at McNeese State University.
Southern (2-1) recorded the first run of the game, taking advantage of the Cavaliers early mistake on a Lizzie Donaldson infield groundout, scoring Sydney Andrews who made it on base on balls and advance two bases on back to back wild pitches.
Virginia (2-3) answered back with 14th straight runs over the next three innings on 11 hits.
The Jaguars added another run on a passed ball in the top of the fourth closing the score at 14-2.
Southern's Donaldson was able to break the no-hitter with a double through the right side in the top of the fifth inning.
Despite recording one hit, the Jags struck out once and was walked nine times.
The loss went to Aubrion James (1-1). James allowed five earned runs, six runs, on five hits, walked a batter, and struck out two Cavaliers in a inning and half of work.
Southern second game in the tournament versus Houston Baptist was rained out.
The Jaguars will show love as they will host University of Nebraska-Omaha Wednesday, February 14, the game has been moved to Zachary Youth Park, due to unplayable conditions at Jaguar Field. First pitched is scheduled for 4 p.m.
