Softball season ends after 11-4 loss to Valley
IRONDALE, Ala. -- Southern University softball watched as Mississippi Valley turned a one-run lead into an 11-4 route, eliminating the Lady Jaguars from the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon.
SU, which has been eliminated by Valley in four of its last five tournament appearances, ends the season with a 12-20 record.
With SU reeling from Thursday's heartbreaking 7-6 extra inning loss to Alabama State, Valley seized an early 3-0 lead but the Lady Jaguars responded when sophomore catcher Kiara Suttles scored on a Shanua Knighten RBI double in the bottom of the first.
Suttles scored again in the bottom of the third on a throwing error by Valley's Monica River but that would be as close as SU would get.
Leading 3-2, the Devilettes scored the next six runs, including three in the fourth to pull away from SU. After SU added two runs in the sixth, Valley closed the door on any Lady Jaguar rally after Kailynn Dunn's two RBI single.
SU was limited to five hits while Valley belted out 12 hits led by Deja Talton, who went 4 for 5 with a homerun and four RBIs. Suttles' lone hit - a double down the left field line - came in the sixth but the team's homerun leader walked and was hit-by-pitch.
Starting pitcher Kayleigh Thomas recorded the loss after lasting four innings and allowing eight runs on eight hits before exiting in the fifth.
