Southern salvages split to secure No. 2 seed
IRONDALE, ALA -- Sophomore catcher Kiara Suttles hit two homeruns and a triple to help Southern University salvage a split over Prairie View A&M on Monday in Irondale, Ala.
In a make-up game played at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex, Southern secure the West's No. 2 seed after defeating the Panthers 7-2 in Game 2 of the doubleheader. With the win, Southern clinches the No. 2 seed for the second consecutive season under head coach John Garris.
Southern will open the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball tournament against Mississippi Valley on Wednesday at Shea Brothers Softball Complex.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Suttles, who went 2 for 2 at the plate in the Jaguars 7-5 loss in game one, hit her second homerun of the day to ignite a 5-run fourth inning take a 5-2 lead. The Lady Jaguars held the Panthers scoreless over the final three inning while adding a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning.
In Game One, Southern held a slim 5-4 lead over Prairie View heading into the top of the ninth before allowing three runs. Despite Tiara Scott's pitching a complete game with four strikeouts, Southern committed three errors and stranded nine baserunners.
