BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Southern University track and field continued their outstanding performances this weekend in their second indoor meet of the season at the Samford Invitational at the Birmingham Cross Plex.
The men's and women's team propelled several Jaguars to the top of the SWAC ranking in their respective events. Including, Nia Williams in the 60 meter hurdles, Terralicia Mercadel in the 400 meter hurdles, Faith Estelle in the weight throw, and Jeremey Bass in the shot put and weight throw.
"We ended up with about ten kids getting a personal best, which is always a great thing," Head Coach Teremine White said.
For the second week in a row junior Nia Williams took first in the 60-meter hurdles. Breaking her own record and running a personal best time of 8:80.
"One thing my coach mentioned to me that made me run differently, was that these girls weren't going to just give me the win," Williams said.
In the Jaguars first meet, Williams recorded her first victory in the 60 meter hurdles beating top runners from Houston, Grambling, and Rice.
Senior Terralicia Mercadel finished first in the 400-meter dash running a time of 56:59 in her first 400-meter run of the season.
"Opening my season up running in my very first 400 and having the fastest time in the SWAC was a good feeling," Mercadel said.
Senior Faith Estelle returned from a rough start and threw a personal best of 55' 7.75" in the weight throw. Estelle not only took the first place win this weekend but is now first on the SWAC performance list.
"(Finishing) number one feels good but I'm not too anxious, too excited yet," Estelle said. "I know that I have a lot of work to do,"
On the men's side, junior Jeremy Bass threw a 52' 2.5" in the weight throw. Putting him second in the SWAC just after the second indoor meet. It doesn't end there, Bass threw a 48' 9" in the shot put. This throw also put him in second on the SWAC performance list.
The track team will return a little closer to home this weekend when they travel to Lake Charles, La. for the McNeese State Indoor Invite II, January 25 at McNeese State University. The first event is scheduled to start at 11:00 am.
