Jamira Russ wins gold at the 2018 SWAC OT&F Championship

Prairie View, Texas | Jamira Russ added hardware to her decorated career, earning gold on her final toss in the hammer throw to kickoff the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship Friday afternoon, on the campus of Prairie View A&M University.

Southern University competed in one event Friday. Russ led the Jaguars with a SWAC Championship record 53.02m. Alexandria McCoy also scored finishing in sixth place with a throw of 43.39m. K'Yana Jackson finished 13th, Houston native Skyie Sparks finish 18th.

In one event Southern racked up 13 points, to sit in fifth place in the standings after three events scored.

The Jaguars will be back in action tommorow starting at noon with the long jump and shot put.

Saturday events will be streamed on Prairie View Sports Network and the final day of competition -- May 6 -- will be streamed live via the SWAC Digital Network.
