Women's Indoor set for SWAC Championships Thursday and Friday
The 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held at the Birmingham Crossplex Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16. All 10 member institutions of the conference will be featured.

The Jaguars' K'Yana Jackson, Skyie Sparks will get the day started for Southern in the first flight of the women weight throw; Alexandria McCoy, Estelle Faith, and 2017 Indoor Winner Jamira Russ well compete in the second flight at 1 p.m.
Russ ranks 60th in the nation with a toss of 19.23m at the LSU Bayou Bengal Indoor Meet; the mark ranks first in the SWAC, the next competitor from UAPB threw 17.25m. Estelle ranks fifth, McCoy ranks eighth to round out the top ten. Russ has been featured as the SWAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Field Athlete of the week 3 times this season
Southern will have two competitors in the 3000m run which begins at 12:00 pm, Danae Colston, and Dazya Mitchell will compete in the field of 26 competitors. Colston and Mitchell rank 14th and 17th respectively.
Three Jaguars' Tiana Cephers Dominique Dorsey and Vashti Hanna will compete in the long jump. Hanna will compete in the second flight. Hanna ranks third this season with a leap of 5.69m. Hanna won three of four meets that she fought in and is a favorite to win this event.
The 60m dash will have five preliminaries heats, the top eight runners advances to the finals on Friday. Southern will send out 4 Jags' Vashti Hannah, Dominique Dorsey, Nia Williams, Brandolyn Walker and Camryn Hawkins. Hawkins' and Williams's times rank ninth and tenth respectively in the SWAC rankings. Hawkins has been on fire of late finishing first in the 60m dash and 200m dash at McNeese and finishing first at the LSU Bayou Bengal Indoor Meet.
The Mile Run features a 24-man field two preliminaries heat with the top 12 times advancing to the finals on Friday. Danae Colston and Dazya Mitchell will represent Southern. Mitchell in her first collegiate championships sits in the middle of the SWAC rankings with a time of 5:46.28; Colston ran a season-best at the LSU Bayou Bengal meet with a time of 5:43.27.
The 400m dash will have ten preliminary heats. Southern's Ashley Miles, Terralicia Mercadel, and Raelynn Price will compete in this race. Terralicia Mercadel is one of the top runners to compete in this race, she finished fourth last season and ranked third in the SWAC this season with a time of 56.44 seconds.
The 800m will have 22 runners competing for the top eight spots who will advance to the finals on Friday. Tessa Toney and Raelynn Price will compete in the 800. Toney finished 8th at the LSU Bayou Bengal with a career-best 2:31.06.
The 200M dash will have 11 preliminary heats featuring 44 runners. Southern's Ashley Miles, Dominique Dorsey, Camry Hawkins,
The final event of the day will be the Women's, Distance Medley. The Medley team will consist of Danae Colston, Raelynn Price, Ashley Miles, Dazya Mitchell, and Tessa Toney.
Southern will compete in the triple jump, shot put, 5000-meter run and the 4x400 relay.
