IF&T: Southern places first among division I teams
BIRMINGHAM, Al. -- Southern completed the sweep as the Jaguars placed first in both the Women's and Men's team competition at the Emory Crossplex Invitational Sunday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
In what is turning into a healthy rivalry on the track the Jaguars bested the Lady Braves of Alcorn by three points.
Southern Jamira Russ continues to tear through her competition on the weight throw recording a season-best 18.75m toss -- which would have been a new meet record if not for a 19.26m toss by Brittany Cox who competed unattached. Teammate Faith Estelle was third (14.14m). Southern also had a winner in the long jump as Vashti Hannah (5.58m) placed first for the second time this season beating out Alcorn State's Chinyere Mbonu (5.41m; 2nd) and Justice Edwards (5.33m; 3rd) to win it.
Southern Alexandria McCoy and Skyie Sparks scored in the shot put finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
On the men's side, Southern's Amari Calvillo-Tatum was fourth in the men's 400m dash (50.38). Alcorn's Lane Ross was seventh (50.69), and he also finished third in the 60m hurdles (8.36). Fellow Brave Josias Jean claimed fifth (8.71) in the same event.
