BIRMINGHAM, Ala – The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) released its 2019 preseason honors where Southern University saw two Jaguars on the Preseason All-SWAC team. The announcement came Friday afternoon.

After, a stellar freshman campaign, Chioma Eriken (Mesquite, TX) was selected as the league’s preseason goalkeeper of the year. A year ago, the Texas native led the nation in saves (165) and saves per game (10) to break Southern’s single-season record. Eriken ranked second in the league with a .847 save percentage. Eriken recorded six matches with 10 or more saves. She is responsible for the most saves in a single match by any player in the country last season, thanks to a 22-stop effort versus Grambling State on October 5 breaking the school’s single-game record. Eriken earned the 2018 SWAC Goalkeeper of the Year, a spot on the All-SWAC first team and the All- SWAC tournament team. To go with her conference accolades, she was named 2019 Louisiana freshman of the year.

Lauryn McKinney (Atlanta, Ga.) was named to the 2019 preseason All-SWAC second team. The Georgia native recorded a career-high of 4-goals last season playing in 16 games starting 15. McKinney recorded two winning goals.

Southern was predicted to finish fifth(82 points). Howard was predicted to win the SWAC title for the second consecutive season after accumulating 172 points. Grambling State was projected to finish second overall (141 points).

The selections were voted on by the Conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.

Southern opens up the season with a pair of road games, kicking off the season at Cowgirls field versus McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. (Aug. 23). The Jaguars will continue their road swing in Nacogdoches, TX versus Stephen F. Austin (Aug. 30). To see the 2019 season schedule please click here.
