BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Southern University Women's Soccer team will play four matches during its 2019 spring season, as announced by head coach Jeremy Fontenot on Tuesday afternoon.
The Jaguars will look to build off an improved 2018 season that saw them collect four wins for the first time since 2014 and taking a trip to the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Soccer Tournament falling in heartbreaking fashion to the Tournament Champ Howard University 1-0 in double overtime. SU will return 23 players, including first-team All-SWAC selection and freshmen of the year goalkeeper Chioma Eriken. Eriken was also named Louisiana freshman of the year. Eriken broke Southern's single-season saves record and led the nation in saves(165).
Southern officially started spring practice in January, the 23 players are the most to participate since head coach Fontenot took charge of the program in 2014.
Southern will kick off their spring schedule March 9 versus McNeese State University. The Cowgirls finished the 2018 season 13-7-1, and fourth in conference play. Southern fell to McNeese 6-1 in 2014.
The Jaguars will face the Lady Colonels of Nicholls State on March 17 at 1:00 p.m at Jaguar Park. Last season contest was ruled a no-contest due to lightning. Nicholls will be going into the 2019 season with a new face leading at the helm, but no stranger to the program as assistant coach Danny Free has been appointed the interim head coach.
Southern will close their spring schedule against LSU, March 19 at LSU Soccer Stadium. LSU is coming off a prolific season winning the SEC tournament, before losing to USC in the second round of the NCAA tournament. LSU won three overtime post-season game on penalty kicks.
