The Southern University Lady Jaguars soccer team played its most competitive and physical games of the season; taking both matches to double-overtime. 58 total fouls and 15 yellow cards were issued, including nine from Southern University.
Lady Jaguars hold on to a draw
PINE BLUFF, Ark.-- Southern University's Akosua Allen broke the game open in the 84th-minute mark when Lauren McKinnley passed a loose ball in the penalty which Allen streaked past the defender for her first goal of the season.
The lead was short-lived, the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored four minutes later off a corner kick when UAPB's defender Ana Sivero found Rebecca Holmes in the box who scored the tying score off a header at the 88th-minute mark.
Both squads had opportunities to take the lead before the end of regulation but could not find the net. Southern goalkeeper Kendra Lee recorded five saves in the draw, she saved a potential game-winner in overtime to kill the Golden lion's momentum.
Grambling State escapes with a double-overtime victory
GRAMBLING -- The Grambling State University Lady Tigers snuck a shot past Southern University Lady Jaguars backup goalie to steal a 2-1 win in the 105th minute in double-overtime.
In a match that was similar to a heavyweight bout, the game was a physical that saw ten first period fouls and only five shots.
Grambling struck first in the 68-minute mark on a Jasmine Smith goal off a Kaylee Holt dish-back that found the far post to give GSU a 1-0 lead.
Southern struck back in the 80th minute when Taylor Coleman was able to curtail a loose ball in the box and kicked a striker into the net for the tie.
The Lady Jaguars was able to hold on for the next ten minutes to end 90 minutes of play.
In consecutive games, Southern University found itself in overtime games. In the first overtime defense was the name of the game as neither teams could get a footing. In the second overtime however, some chippy play and a second yellow card, desqualified goalkeeper Kendra Lewis. Grambling State took advantage quickly scoring within a minute off a Abby Farias punchout.
This was the first loss to Grambling in four years.
The Lady Jaguars return home to face Mississippi Valley State University on Friday, October 6, at Jaguar Park first touch scheduled for 6 p.m. Southern University will host an Alumni Match prior to the Valley game at 4 pm
