Soccer faces S.C. State in season opener Friday
Southern University women's soccer opens its 2015 campaign with a two-game slate starting Friday when the Lady Jaguars face South Carolina State in the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley Tournament in Edinburg, Texas.
SU returns several letterwinners from the 2014 squad, including junior Shelby Carbin, who earned Preseason All-SWAC second team honors as a defender. New Orleans native and senior Jami Blackston adds veteran leadership and a proven striker as SU aims to improve on the 13 goals score a season ago.
First touch for Friday's game is set for 5 p.m. and will mark the first meeting between two teams who finished the 2014 season in similar fashion.
A year after claiming the program's first Southwestern Athletic Conference division title in 2013, SU (4-13-2) battled through a series of injuries at the midpoint of the season which led to a five-game losing streak at the end of the 2014 season. The losing streak came on the heals of a six-game stretch where the Jaguars won 4-of-6 games with two ties and produced five consecutive shutouts.
South Carolina State finished 3-14-1 as an independent and fell 1-0 to SWAC member Alabama State.
UTRGV, which debuted its soccer program last season against SU as Texas-Pan American, will host the Lady Jaguars Sunday in a game that will stream live on YouTube at 1 p.m.
SU managed to hold UTRGV scoreless for 51' before yielding a Andreya Barrera goal, the first goal scored in Vaqueros' history. The Lady Jaguars fell to UTRGV 2-0 despite nine saves from goalkeeper Sarah Forde.
Following Sunday's UTRGV Tournament finale, SU returns home to regroup before hitting the road to face Nicholls State on Aug. 30.
