LORMAN, Miss. -- It was a battle of the titans and rematch of the 2018 SWAC Championship game. Southern's 6-3 halftime lead wasn't enough to stop the Braves from securing another victory over Southern University football team. The Jags fell 27-13 to the Braves.
This game was a battle of the SWAC West division and East division leaders and an opportunity to host the 2019 SWAC Championship game on December 7th. Southern and Alcorn battled back and forth in the first quarter going scoreless until Alcorn State's Corey McCullough connects on a 37-yard field goal to give the Braves a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Jaguars put together a 20-play, 84-yard drive to take a 6-3 halftime lead off a two-yard run by Glendon McDaniel. That drive took a whopping ten minutes off the clock in the second quarter.
In the second half, the Jaguars gave up 24 unanswered points to the Braves before Ladarius Skelton connected with senior wide receiver Hunter Register in the back of the end zone on a 12 yard pass play with 2:18 remaining in the contest. To make the score 13-27. Southern completely controlled the tempo of the game in the first half by winning the time of possession and only allowing Alcorn's high power offense to see the field for over ten minutes. The roles reversed the second half, Alcorn won the time of possession battle in the second half keeping Southern's offense in check and the defense on the field.
Offensively for Southern, both quarterbacks were 25 of 39 passing with one interception collectively and 209 yards passing with one touchdown. Skelton finished the night with 114 yards and McDaniel added 95 in the air for the Jaguars. Register leads the Jaguars with eight receptions for seventy yards and a score.
The Jaguars defense was lead by Dakavian Champion with eight tackles, one sack and three tackles for a loss of 22 yards. Benjamin Harris and Jakoby Pappillion recorded solid performances adding seven tackle each. Harris had a forced fumble on the one-yard line in the first half.
The Jaguars still sit at the top of the SWAC Western Division at 3-1.
