Southern Jaguar Football Opens On Road

BATON ROUGE - The 2019 Season for the Southern University Jaguar football team will begin on the road versus the McNeese State Cowboys. Kickoff is set for this Saturday at 6:05PM and can be seen LIVE on CST throughout the state.  The  Jaguar-Nation can catch the game on KQXL Q106.5 as well as www.gojagsports.com

The Jaguars are coming off of a SWAC Western Division championship, their first since the 2014 campaign. Plenty of experience returns on both sides of the ball with sixteen returning starters including 9 on offense and 7 on defense.

Offensively, the Jaguars return plenty of protection for returning QB Ladarius Skelton, returning all 5 starters on the offensive line. The starters; Left-tackle-Ja'Tyre Carter, Left Guard- Jeremiah Abby, Center-Jaylon Brinson, Right Guard-Jonathan Bishop and Right Tackle-Jodeci Harris combined to give up only nineteen sacks last season. Skelton went 5-1 as a starter, throwing for 997 yards.  As a rusher he amassed 523 yards on the ground during the time period and scored a combined eighteen touchdowns. Other impact players on the offensive side of the ball include; Tight End Jeremias Houston, Running Back Devon Benn, and Wide Receivers Jamar Washington, Hunter Register and newcomer TJ Bedford.

Defensively, Southern returns leading tackler Calvin Lunkins, with eighty-two tackles during the 2018 campaign. Senior free safety, Montavious Gaines chipped in with an additional fifty-five tackles to lead the secondary. Ranked 6TH nationally in sacks Sophomore Defensive End Jordan Lewis returns to pace the jaguars defensive front. Other starters returning include Senior Defensive End Joe Davis, Sr. Defensive Tackle Dakavion Champion, and transfer Defensive Tackle Davin Cotton.  Hometown favorite and starting Weakside Linebacker, Jakoby Pappillion returns to the city of Lake Charles where he prepped as a high school football player.

On Special Teams, Cesar Barajas will kick-off and handle long field goals. He will also use his powerful leg to punt while Martell Fontenot handles PAT’s and short-range field goals

In spite of the medias prediction to repeat as the SWAC Western Division Champions, Jags Head Football Coach, Dawson Odums focus remains squarely on this weeks’ opponent.   “Everything starts this Saturday night at Cowboy Stadium in Lake Charles against McNeese State”.
