NEW ORLEANS -- Southern University Jaguars started 2018 with a bang, run-ruling the Lady Bisons of Howard University 10-1 in game one and a come-from-behind 9-to-5 victory in dramatic fashion to complete the sweep Thursday afternoon at the New Orleans Urban Youth Academy.
The Jaguar’s Sydney Andrews recorded the first RBI of the season with a single over the outstretched arm of the third baseman, after Scott’s leadoff double. Andrews moved into scoring position after stealing second and scored after a Jamani Greer doubles down the left field line to extend the lead 2-0 going to the top of the fourth inning.
Preseason All-SWAC selection Aubrion James pitched her first complete game of the season, eighth of her young career. The sophomore allowed four hits, one earned run on a bang-bang play at the plate and hit one batter. James helped out on the offensive side of the plate going 1-of-2, recording a run and a sacrifice hit.
Andrews was one of two Jaguars to go 3-of-3 to start her senior campaign, recording two steals, and two runs. Tiara Scott recorded a stellar game one at the bottom of the order going 3-of-3, three RBIs, and scored three times. The Junior pitcher recorded Southern’s first long ball of the season to end the game in the bottom of the fifth when Scott launched a Howard pitch over the left field wall scoring Scarlet Brock and Celeste Williams.
As a team, Southern recorded 10 runs on 11 hits. The defense held Howard to 17 at bats
In game two, Southern exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to wrestled the win from Howard University to start the season streaking.
The top of the lineup came alive and big, belting seven hits, seven RBIs, five runs, two doubles, two home runs, a stolen base and a sacrifice hit. Jamani Greer recorded her first home run of the season and Aubrion James recorded her first career in the park home run.
The Lady Bison’s struck first, taking advantage of a Kiara Suttles errant throw to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. The Jaguars wasted no time answering back with a big third inning, which began with a Scarlett Brock leadoff double to left field, she advanced to third after an Andrews popup to shallow centerfield. Suttles double to centerfield to begin the scoring. Jamani Greer homered to left field to cap the three-run inning to help Southern regain a 3-1 lead.
Howard clapped back with a four-run fourth inning to capture a 5-3 lead.
Undeterred, Shauna Knighten scored on a Brock RBI single to first to close the gap to 5-4.
Elizabeth Donaldson came into pitch in the middle of the fourth inning, pitched 3.2 innings allowing one run on two hits, struck out three Lady Bisons, holding Howard scoreless the final three innings, recording her first win of the season.
Southern broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth kicked off by James in the park home run and followed up by Alison Walton crushed her first career home run over the left field wall to score the go-ahead-run, Southern added two more to cap the scoring at 9-5.
Tiara Scott got the nod in the circle, pitched 3.1 innings allowing two earned runs, four hits, striking out a Bison in a no-decision.
