Southern University football announced the signing of 10 prospective student-athletes to the 2018 signing class as the 2018 Early Signing Period opened Wednesday, December 20.

Head Coach Dawson Odums unveiled the class, his sixth class since having the interim tag removed in 2012, and anticipates revealing mid-semester enrollees when Spring class begin in January.

The 10 signees who inked National Letters of Intent feature length and size as the Jaguars sign two wide receivers, two defensive lineman, one tight end and one defensive back listed at 6 feet 3 inches tall. In all, only two of the Jaguars 10 signees are listed under six feet.

Southern looked to address the need for more dynamic playmakers on the edge, inking three wide receivers and one tight end. Defensively, the Jaguars add two interior lineman, one lineman and one defensive back.

On special teams, Southern signed 5-9 kicker Martell Fontenot of Zachary, who claimed the state's Class 5A title in 2017. New recruit Jamel Byrd, who played Hahnville in the championship game against Zachary, joins Fontenot as members of the SU Football program.

Odum, who has often championed the program's "tank-of-gas" recruiting philosophy, relied heavily on the Jaguars strong ties in Louisiana and Texas to fill out his most recent recruiting class.

For the first time in three years, Southern will hold spring football in April which will culminate with the Jaguar Spring Game tentatively scheduled for April 21.
