After enduring 21 innings of baseball on Saturday, Southern University baseball provided an eggs-clamation point in the Southwestern Athletic Conference series finale at Lee-Hines Field, ousting Texas Southern 16-6 in a seven-inning, mercy-rule triumph Sunday afternoon.
The Jaguars have won six of their previous seven games and now sit atop the SWAC western division with a 14-3 record with only two road series remaining on the 2019 schedule.
Southern honored nine members of the 2019 Senior class, including third baseman Tyler LaPorte, who led the Jaguars with a 3 for 3 outing with five runs scored. LaPorte recorded two doubles and joined nine Jaguars hitter who recorded a hit against a depleted TSU pitching staff. The Tigers used four different pitchers and combined to throw 11 walks in the loss.
Starting pitcher John Guienze lasted four and 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out three Tigers. Guienze exited in the top of the fifth with Southern clinging to a 7-5 lead when the Jaguars flipped the switched to outscore Texas Southern 9-1 over the final three innings.
Malik Blaise, who finished with two his, two RBIs, and two runs scored, opened the fifth with a lead off walk then advanced to third after Coby Taylor singled through the left side. Willie Ward drove in Blaise from third on a sacrifice fly. After Hampton Hudson flied out, Alex Carrillo loaded the bases with a pair of two out walks. Senior Eian Mitchell's clutch single to centerfield scored Javeyan Williams and Coby Taylor before LaPorte reached home on a wild pitch. Two more walks lead to Blaise's 2-RBI single ended the scoring for SU in the fifth.
LaPorte lead off the seventh with another walk then scored on another wild pitch. Bobby Johnson ended the series with a 2 RBI single to score Ashanti Wheatley and Rashard Ranie who each reached base on walks.
Southern will look to win their fourth straight mid week game on Tuesday when the Jaguars host the ULM Warhawks at Lee-Hines Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
