NEW ORLEANS -- Southern University baseball punctuated the program's 12th appearance at Andre Dawson Classic with a 12-9 win over Alcorn State Sunday evening to finish 3-0 during opening weekend.
After edging past Florida A&M and Grambling State, Southern scored 12 runs on 13 hits led by Michael Wright's 3 for 5 day at the plate. Wright, a sophomore outfielder from Atlanta, doubled and drove in three runs. Wright also score three times and collected his first stolen base of the season.
During the three-day event, the Jaguars scored 24 runs in three games and recorded 30 strikeouts.
After falling behind 3-0 early, Southern University responded in the top of the third when Malik Blaise's single preceded consecutive doubles from Jayveyan Williams and Wright that trim the Braves lead to 3-2. Johnny Johnson singled with two outs to score Wright and tie the game at 3 all.
Alcorn State opened the bottom half of the third with a leadoff homer from Micah Walker before extending their lead to 5-3 on Kirt Cormier run on a Eli Finney wild pitch.
Despite yielding two runs in the third, the Jaguars continued to apply pressure offensively, scoring eight run over the next three innings. Williams and Blaise joined Wright as Jaguars with multiple hits in the win. In total, nine batters recorded hit for Southern.
Southern wraps up opening weekend with a Monday matinee at Alex Box Stadium against Air Force at 2 p.m. Admission to the game is free for fans.
