BATON ROUGE, La -- Southern University Jaguars returned to Jaguar Field and defeated Mississippi Valley State in a pitching duel in a game one of a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) weekend series Friday afternoon on Jaguar Field.
Aubrion James pitched her first career no-hitter in a pitching duel, recording her third win of the season, recorded one run (unearned), one walk and three strikeouts.
James no-hitter was the first since Southern's Megan Hodge threw a five-inning no-hitter in a 9-0 victory over Texas Southern April 7, 2007, and a seven-inning no-hitter in a 1-0 defeat to Alcorn State March 1, 2008.
In the last three games, James has recorded two wins in two starts has allowed one run (unearned), three hits and struck out seven in 13.2 innings of work.
Alejandra Salazar recorded her second loss of the season, allowed two runs (unearned), four hits, striking out a career-high eight Jaguars.
Southern got on board first in the bottom of fifth taking advantage of an errant throw to score two.
Mississippi Valley State answered back in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of an infield fielding error to close the gap, 2-1.
The next six batters from both teams were all sat down to close the game.
Southern improved to 4-14 overall and 2-2 in conference play. MVSU falls to 2-20, 1-4.
Southern will play a doubleheader Saturday to close out the series.
