Held at McNeese State University Recreation Complex in Lake Charles, La. on January 2, 2018

BATON ROUGE, La -- Southern University Indoor Track & Field team travels to Lake Charles, Louisiana to participate in the McNeese Indoor Invitational #1, Friday, January 12, at the McNeese State Indoor Recreation Complex.

Admission for the invitational is $5.

The first event is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start with the women's weight throw and the men's shot put, with running events to begin at 4:30 pm with the men's and women's 55m hurdles and dash, finals are scheduled for 6 p.m.

In 1993 Southern's Derrick Ford and Latey Davenport broke the 55m hurdle record in the McNeese Indoor Rec Complex, with the time of 6.99 and 7.77 seconds respectively, which still stands.

Southern 2012 Men's team holds the McNeese State#1 College meet record in the 4x400m Relay with a time of 3:22.61.

Southern is coming off a solid season-opening of the 2018 season with a strong showing at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational last Friday at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse. The Jaguars fielded 40 athletes and four relay teams.

Athletes to watch:

Senior Jamira Russ was named Women's Fields Athlete of the Week for her second-place finish in the weight throw and her third-place throw in the shot put. The Plaquemine, Louisiana native throw of 12.65m in the shot put was a personal record, breaking her last record of 12.07m at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Championship on February 16, 2017.

Junior Terralicia Mercadel ran a personal best 1:21.18 in the 500m and placed in second in the 200m with a time of 25.65 a second off of her personal best 24.66 ran at the McNeese Spring Time Classic on April 8, 2017.

Freshman Abraham Gordwin ran his first collegiate indoor meet and placed third in the 200m with a time of 22.87m

Sophomore Vashiti Hannah placed first in the long jump with a jump of 5.54m her longest jump since jumping 5.60m at the McNeese State #1 Invite January 13, 2017.

Joining the Jaguars in the field will be McNeese, Grambling, Loyola [New Orleans], Louisiana College, and Nicholls.
