Softball seniors go out with a bang
BATON ROUGE, La. | On a day Southern University celebrated the careers of three seniors, Southern put together one of their best performances of the season sweeping Friday's afternoon twin-bill versus the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University 11-1, 8-2 at the Oak Villa BREC Park.
In game one, Jackson State scored first after an errant throw ended in the outfield to take an early 1-0 lead.
Southern's Senior #2 Sydney Andrews lead off the game with a bunt single, the next three batters Senior #20 Kiara Suttles, #22 Lizzie Donaldson, and Senior #21 Jamani Greer got a taste of the long ball, hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs to left field. Jasmine Duke knocked a heater thru the right side for a base hit and stolen second base to put herself in scoring position. Aubri James yanked a 0-2 pitch down the left field line for a double scoring Duke and took advantage of an errant throw to extend the lead, 6-1. Tiara Scott took a 3-2 pitch through the left side for a single, and advance on a Shauna Knighten single through the left side. Both would later score on a fielder's choice to end the inning up 7-1.
That was all Southern needed as they cruised the rest of the way.
Tiara Scott got the nod in the circle and pitched her best outing of the season, after giving up an unearned run, Scott held the Lady Tigers scoreless the rest of the way, striking out three, allowing three hits and walked 3 in five innings pitched.
Southern added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead, 11-1 to secure a run-rule win.
The seniors came up big for the Jaguars in game one, combining for 4 hits, 3 RBIs, and 5 runs.
Lizzie Donaldson went 3-for-3, recorded an RBI, and scored twice, hitting a monster homerun to left field.
James, Suttles, and Dukes recorded two RBI's.
In game two, Southern's Aubri James pitched her second shutout of the season, holding Jackson State to four hits, in an 8-0 run-rule victory.
Southern jumped on board early taking advantage of a fielding mistake by the catcher to take the lead, 2-0.
The Jaguars added two more in the fourth and exploded for four runs to end the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Seniors added three more hits, 2 RBIs, a run and was walked three times.
James helped her cause yanking a RBI double down the left field line went 1-for-4, a RBI, and a double.
After, going hitless in game one, Alison Walton came up big in game 2, going 3-for-3, scored twice, a RBI, and a double.
James pitched 5 scoreless innings, struck out two, and scattered four hits for her seventh win of the season a career high.
Southern ended their homestand for the season, will travel to Houston, Texas to face Texas Southern University for a three-game series starting Friday, April 20.
