Men's Basketball drops season opener to Illinois
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Southern University Jaguars could not keep pace with the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, dropping the season opener 102-55 at the State Farm Center Friday night.
Southern University (0-1) was paced by senior forward Jared Sam, who recorded a double-double a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. The junior from Baton Rouge finished as the lone Jaguar to score in double-digits in 33 minutes. Sam shot 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from the floor and 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from the charity stripe.
As a squad, the Jaguars shot 37.3 percent from the floor and 18.2 (2-11) percent from beyond the arc.
Illinois (1-0) capitalized on Southern's 22 turnovers, scoring 33 points off of Jaguar miscues. The Illini grabbed 28 defensive rebounds converting it to 19-second chance points.
Southern travels to West Virginia to face Marshall University, Monday, Nov. 13 at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, West Virginia.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m EST.
