JACKSON, Miss. -- Southern's' Junior quarterback accounted for four touchdowns in a second-half comeback victory over Jackson State in front of a crowd of 40,085 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium
Ladarius Skelton used his athletic ability to overpower the Tigers defense to account for 304 yards of offense for the Jaguars. Skelton went 12-of-23 passing for 133 yards and a touchdown along with carrying the ball 21 times for 171 yards and three scores on the ground. Senior receiver Hunter Register led the Jaguars with three catches for 66 yards and a score. Southern went into halftime trailing Jackson State 24-17.
In the second half, Southern defense stepped up their intensity forcing a safety with 6:33 left in the third quarter to close the Tigers lead 19-24. On the next offensive drive, SU went 4 plays for 39 yards as Ladarius Skelton scored on a 22 yard rushing touchdown with 4:41 left in the third quarter. The Jaguars took the lead 26-24. The Tigers marched down the field as the Southern defense held its ground and forced JSU to a field goal as the Tigers took the lead 27-26. On the ensuing kickoff Redshirt Sophomore Brandon Hinton returned the kickoff for an 87 yard touchdown and helped the Jaguars regain the lead 33-27 with 1:24 left in the third. Southern outscored the Tigers 16-3 in the third quarter with time of possession of 5:41 to JSU 9:19.
The Jaguars went 7 plays for 61 yards, capped off by Skelton 7 yard touchdown run in the 4th to put the Jaguars up 40-27. Jalen Ivy lead the Jaguars defensive pressure with two sacks and seven tackles. Ivy had four tackles for a loss of 10 yards.
Southern (7-4, 5-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) has won six of its last seven games. The Jaguars sit at the top of the Western Division.
The Jaguars travel down I-10 to the Big Easy to face Grambling State University in a winner takes all Bayou Classic in the Mercedes Benz Superdome. The game is on November 30th at 4:00 PM live on NBC Sports.
This game is slated as the Western Division Championship game. The winner will face Alcorn State University on December 7th. The game will be held on the home campus of the highest seed on the SWAC at the end of the season.
