New Orleans- After an extremely hard-fought competition, Southern University Volleyball fell just short of their potential first win of the season on Saturday evening. The Jaguars went head-to-head with the Bears of Mercer University in their first match of the tournament on Friday, September 13.

The Jaguars took the first set, 28-26, as they fought tooth and nail to stay alive. The Bears took a slight lead in the second set and topped the Jaguars, 26-24. In set three, the Jaguars were able to prevail, once again, coming up on top 25-19. The Bears took the rest of the match in sets four (22-25) and five (12-15), retiring the Jaguars from the match.

Shelby Jolly led the team in kills with 11, followed by Arabella Hall (8) and Brianna Hawkins (6) and Princess Stark (6). Stark also had 33 assists in the match. Sameera Mohammed completed 33 digs, followed by Princess Stark (15) and Brianna Hawkins (13).

New Orleans- In day two of the New Orleans Invitational, the Jaguars took on the Tigers of Tennessee State and host team, UNO Privateers. The Jaguars dropped both matches, 3-0. The Jaguars had another match of strong energy, but it wasn't enough to keep them afloat throughout the game. The Jaguars lost 25-19, 26-24, 25-21. 

The team leaders for the Jaguars were Shelby Jolly, (12 kills, 1 ace, and 2 blocks), Brianna Hawkins, (8 kills, 2 aces, and 10 digs) and Princess Stark (26 assists and 9 digs).

In the final match of the tournament, the Jaguars were defeated, 3-0 to a tough host opponent, UNO. The Jaguars struggled to find their rhythm in the first set as they fell 9-25. They began to make a comeback in the second set but fell a bit closer 21-25. The third set was much like the first as the Jaguars came up short again in a 20-25 loss.

Arabella Hall and Imani Litz each had 5 kills followed by Shelby Jolly's 4 kills. Arabella Hall, Sameera Mohammed, and Imani Litz each had 1 ace. Princess Stark had 14 assists, Sameera Mohammed had 2 assists, and Jada Carter has 1.

Arabella Hall was named to the New Orleans Tournament All-Tournament Team. She finished the weekend with a total of 16 kills, 16 blocks, 3 aces, and 2 digs for 23 points.

The Jaguars will be traveling to Alabama for the Troy Invitational on Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21.
