BATON ROUGE - Southern University soccer defeated Nicholls State, 2-1 Sunday afternoon in their fifth game of the season and their second game of a three-game run at home.
Southern improves to (1-4, 0-0), Nicholls falls to (3-3, 1-0)
Nicholls got out in front scoring in the first half. Blaire Laiche scored giving her team a 1-0 lead at the 10-minute mark. The Jaguars fought their way on the board not too long after. Miamour Mesa scored making it a tied game at the 29-minute mark.
Southern's defense fought off the Colonels to get the ball back to their offense. The Jaguars then got the ball back to Miamour Mesa scoring the second goal for her team making the score 2-1 at the 33-minute mark.
Nicholls outshot Southern, 17-12, and posted 3-1 shots on goal advantage. Junior Transfer goalkeeper, Alayna Gray, had 10 saves out of 15 shots. Gray recorded 81- minutes in today's game. Sophomore Chioma Eriken had 2 saves out of 3 shots. Eriken recorded 8-minutes in today's game. The Jaguars held a 9-8 advantage in corner kicks.
"Miamour Mesa has been working on her shot all season and that work paid off today with 4 shots and 2 goals. It was a great team win we are headed in a positive direction," said head coach Jeremy Fontenot.
The Jaguars will host the University of Louisiana at Monroe Wednesday, September 18 at Jaguar Park at 6:00 p.m.
