Southern's quest to return to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship game has begun, as the Jaguars completed the first two days of fall camp at the A.W. Mumford Stadium.
The Jaguars returned to campus on Wednesday to pick up equipment and attend team meetings. Thursdays the players met with all the campus auxiliary units (campus housing, campus dining, campus police, and parking, athletic staff) and received important information about campus life.
The Jags finally donned their helmets and hit the turf on Friday, led by Junior quarterback Ladaruis Skelton, and Sophomore defensive end Jordan Lewis, who led the league in sacks as a true freshman. Lewis earned first-team preseason All-SWAC honors along with offensive lineman Jodeci Harris, who ended his 2018 campaign as an All-SWAC first-team selection. Three Jaguars were named to the All-SWAC second team including center Jaylon Brinson, safety Montavius Gaines and running back Devon Benn.
Southern comes back with 34 four-year or fifth-year seniors for the 2019 campaign. Highly skilled returning quarterback Skelton who went 5-1 in the last six games, and led the Jaguars to a Bayou Classic victory and a birth to the 2018 SWAC Championship game, had the benefit of a full spring and summer camp as the starter. Skelton will play behind an offensive line that returns all five starters from last season.
Southern added LSU transfer Davin Cotton. The Shreveport native will give the Jaguars a six-man rotation at the defensive tackle position. The rotation will pair him with Dakavion Champion and leading tackler Calvin Lunkins which should improve the Jaguars run defense.
With APR and other NCAA infractions behind them, Southern's depth is noticeably larger. With 17 starters returning, and 34 fourth- or fifth-year players in the fold, the Jaguars have more depth than any of Odums’ previous seven seasons. Southern is three-deep at nearly every position.
Southern will have a day of rest on Sunday and return to the practice field on Monday. On Wednesday, the Jaguars will practice in full gear for the first time this fall.
Jag Nation will have the opportunity to see the Jaguars on Fan Day, August 17, from 8 a.m to 10 a.m. After the conclusion, the team will have an autograph session at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
