NEW ORLEANS -- Southern University could not regenerate last night's ninth-inning magic, falling to Texas Southern University 8-6, Saturday morning at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
Southern falls to (30-21) while Texas Southern improves to (20-33).
In the top of the first, Texas Southern's Tyson Thompson took advantage of an errant throw to lead off tonight's contest, scoring two batters later on an O.J. Oloruntimilehin sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Southern answered back grinding out four runs in the bottom of the first. Ashanti Wheatley and Hunter David each recorded a RBI, scoring Johnny Johnson and Wheatley. Bobby Johnson scored after Coby Taylor was hit by a pitch with bases loaded. A wild pitch scored David to give the Jaguars a 4-1 lead.
TSU added runs in the top of the second and third inning to cut the lead,to 3-4.
Southern's Taylor rocked a homerun over the right field in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead, 5-3.
Texas Southern wouldn't go away as they answered back with an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth to close the gap, 4-5.
After, blanking Southern in the bottom of the fifth inning Texas Southern put together a three-run sixth inning to retake the lead, 7-5 in the top of the sixth.
Texas Southern lost command of their pitches, hitting two batters to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning when Hampton Hudson recorded an RBI fielder's choice to the shortstop to trim the lead 7-6.
The Tigers added another run in the top of the 8th inning and held off the Jaguars to take an 8-6 into the final stanza.
Fighting for their season, the Tigers led off the top of the ninth with a double down the left field line. The next two batters were sat down, but the next batter lined one up the middle that bounced of the second baseman glove that kept the runner at third base with two outs left. TSU could not add an insurance run going into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Southern, trying to pull off some more ninth-inning magic in many days, fell short as the Tigers sat the next three batters.
Jerome Bohannon got the nod on the mound pitched 3.1 innings allowing three runs (2 earned), three hits, struck out two, and walking four in a no-decision. Markaylon Boyd recorded the loss, his first loss of the season allowing three runs, a hit, and hitting two batters.
Wheatley recorded two hits, two runs to pace the Jaguars.
Southern is vying for their 27th SWAC Championship and will put their season on the line in an elimination game Saturday, first pitch is scheduled for 3 pm at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
