BATON ROUGE - The Southern University Track and Field program heads to Prairie View, Texas to compete in the 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Prairie View A&M Track Complex on  May 3-5. 
"This is what we've been training for," said Head Coach Teremine White. 
"The athletes are really excited and they are ready to get into this weekend events and start competing."  
On the women's side, senior Faith Estelle will compete in her final outdoor championship. Estelle enters Friday's championship with the No. 2 in the hammer throw in the conference this season with a throw of 54.39 meters (178'5").  
Senior Terralicia Mercadel sits second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.37. Mercadel took second at the 2018 SWAC outdoor championships and she took fourth in the 2019 SWAC indoor championships. Mercadel will compete in her final outdoor season this weekend and looks to have a different outcome in the 400-meter. 
Senior Danae Colston is twelveth on the SWAC performance list in the 5000 meters with a time of 19:56.76 and eighteenth in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:08.29. Colston placed in all her events at the 2019 SWAC indoor championships. Colston is hoping to do the same this weekend at the SWAC outdoor championships. 
The women's 4x400 meter relay team is currently third going into this weekends SWAC championships. The women finished third at the 2019 SWAC indoor championships. The women look to finish first this upcoming weekend but currently sit trail Alabama A&M and Alabama State, who hold the second and first place spots going into conference championships. 
On the men's side, Senior Isaac Brown will run the 800-meter run for the last time this weekend. Brown is currently thirteenth with a time of 1:57.00. Brown vying to finish his last outdoor season on the podium. 
Junior Artis McCoy is top ten in three events going into the SWAC outdoor championship. McCoy is fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.56. McCoy set the personal record at Southeastern earlier this season.  McCoy sits sixth 200-meter dash with a time of 21.34. Lastly, McCoy is tied for ninth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.60. McCoy looks to make the podium in all three events. 
Freshman Charvares Wilson looks to claim his first gold medal this weekend in the shot put. Wilson made the podium at the 2019 SWAC indoor championships with a third-place finish. Wilson sits in third on the SWAC performance list. Wilson also has a chance to score in the discus and hammer throw. Wilson is eighth in the discus throw and tenth in the hammer throw.
