Tyler LaPorte's eight RBIs powers SU to 3-0 sweep
BATON ROUGE -- Tyler LaPorte's second three-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth propelled Southern to a 16-13 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff to sweep the weekend series.
It was Southern's first series sweep in league play since 2017 when the Jaguars swept Texas Southern in former SU head coach Roger Cador's final season.
LaPorte, who batted .500, registered 13 RBIs and launched three homerun in three games, capped of a phenomenal series in dramatic fashion as Southern and UAPB traded timely hits in the decisive game.
Trailing 13-12, Malik Blaise doubled down the left field line to score Hampton Hudson to tie the game. After UAPB intentionally walked Javeyan Williams and sent third baseman Austin Toth to the mound, LaPorte sent the first pitch offering deep over the right centerfield wall for his second three-run home run of the day.
LaPorte, a senior who transferred to Southern from BRCC last season, went 3 for 6 at the plate with eight Rbis and three runs scored. Eight-hole hitter Malik Blaise matched LaPorte's three-hit day, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Hunter David, Zavier Moore and William Nelson each went 2 for 4.
Five Jaguars collected multiple hits as the team recorded 16 hits and 16 RBIs. Both teams emptied the bullpen using 11 pitchers. UAPB’s pitching staff walked eight batters while SU walked six.
Connor Whalen, who entered in the eighth inning and held the Golden Lions final seven batters hitless, secured his first win of the season in two innings of work.
The Jaguars will travel to Monroe to face ULM on Tuesday before return to SWAC play for a three-game road series at Texas Southern.
