MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Southern University fell to Alabama State University after missing two last-second shots, falling to the Hornets, 69-65, Monday Night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Monday night.
Southern (2-6 SWAC, 3-18) led by as many as 13 in the first half before Alabama State (6-1, 8-10) came back to take the lead before the Jaguars took the lead into intermission at 35-34.
SU shot 42 percent in the first half. Aaron Ray and Hassan Hussein led the attack with 10 points apiece.
Alabama State came out in the SWAC shooting over 50 percent to build a 14-point lead with 8:33 left in regulation.
Southern started to claw their way back in and got to within three-points with three-seconds left in regulation. Southern had two opportunities to tie the game but fell short.
Hassan Hussein recorded a team-high 17-points and five rebounds. Aaron Ray and Jayden Saddler recorded 13 and 11 points respectively. Bryan recorded a team-high six rebounds (4 offensive).
Southern free throw woes continued, shooting 54 percent from the free throw line in the second half, 58 percent for the game.
Southern will finish the first half of conference play at Alcorn State University, Saturday, February , tip-off scheduled for 5:30 pm.
