Marjorie Cotton, a renowned high school basketball coach with a track record of success, begins her second season on the Southern women’s basketball staff in 2019-20.

In her first season on the Southern sideline she helped guide the Lady Jags to the 2018-19 SWAC Regular Season Championship, 2019 SWAC Tournament Championship and a 2019 NCAA Tournament appearance finishing the season 20-13 (14-4).

Coming from the high school ranks, Cotton has been a head basketball coach for twenty-three years.  Building high school programs from the ground up has been her forte throughout the state of Louisiana.  Chasing that one final moment has resulted in eight quarter final appearance, five of which were buzzer-beater defeats.

During the 2015 season is where Cotton put her stamp on LHSAA history by becoming the lowest seed to make it to the Louisiana State Championship semi-finals. Leading a 29th seed to compete for a state title while eliminating top seeded teams in her path.

Cotton began her collegiate career at Grambling State University where she played for Patricia Bibbs in the 1991-92 season. The decision to leave and join her younger sister in Mississippi led to her departure. An all-defensive player at Mississippi University for Women, she led her team in steals.

Cotton graduated from Mississippi University for Women in 1996 with a degree in kinesiology. She attended University of Louisiana at Monroe to earn her teaching certificate.

Scholastically, she played in high school at Bastrop High, where she earned defensive honors.
