BIRMINGHAM, AL | Southern University was picked to finish sixth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, voted by the league's head coaches and sports information directors, announced by the conference office Thursday morning.

Southern finished last season 15-18 overall and 10-8 in conference play.

Grambling State (173), last year's regular-season champion, and Texas Southern (151), last year's tournament champion, were picked to finish one and two respectively. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (143) and Southern (132) round out the top.

Following the Hornets are Southern (104) at sixth, Alcorn State (81), Jackson State (72), Mississippi Valley State (45) and Alabama A&M (37).

Senior Sydney Umude was named to the Second Team Preseason All-Conference. Umude, came in late last season, after sitting out the first half the season due to NCAA transfer rules. His first game versus Florida A&M University he recorded a game-high 14 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the floor, and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. His contributed 8.7 points a game and 6.7 rebounds a game last season.

Southern will be led by first-year head coach Sean Woods.

Athletic Director Roman Banks announced Woods as Southern 12th head coach in program history in April.

During the 2011-12 season, Woods led the Delta Devils to a 21-13 record, including a 17-1 record in league play, and earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors.

A native of Indianapolis, Woods also received the Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award - an honor presented annually to the most outstanding minority men’s basketball coach in Division I basketball.

After leaving Mississippi Valley in 2012, Woods became the head coach at Morehead State University, where he compiled a 77-70 record in five seasons.

Woods starred collegiately at Kentucky from 1988-1992 and was a member of the Wildcats senior-laden cast known as the “Unforgettable.”

Southern opens the season on November 6 on the road against the University of Alabama led by Southern Hall of Famer Avery Johnson.
