BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Howard’s Bayley Carmichael, Southern defender Desirae George-McCool and goalkeeper Chioma Eriken have been recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference as soccer players of the week following competition from August 27 – September 2.

"Being able to see your players get awards like this is a great feeling as coach." said head coach Jeremy Fontenot.

SWAC Defensive Player of the Week – George-McCool: In leading Southern to a 2-0 victory over Huston-Tillotson on Sunday, the 5’7 senior from Brampton, Ontario, Canada netted the first goal of her collegiate career. The Jaguars held Huston-Tillotson scoreless on 11 shots in the win, its first shutout since 2016 and the first shutout of a non-conference opponent since 2010. George-McCool averages nearly 75 minutes of on-field time per match.

"For Desirae this was one of her personal goals. This is something that she worked hard for day in and day out. Being a senior player, you push hard to go out with a bang!!" said coach Fontenot

SWAC Goalkeeper of the Week – Eriken: In three combined matches, Eriken turned away a total of 38 shots for the Jaguars. The 5’7 freshman from Mesquite, Texas made nine stops versus Southeastern Louisiana and followed that with a career-best 18 saves versus defending Southland Conference champion Lamar. During the Jaguars’ 2-0 shutout of Huston-Tillotson, Eriken halted 11 attacks on goal. Eriken currently leads the conference with 53 saves, and averages 12.6 stops per match. Her .841 save percentage is also tops in the league.

"As for our freshman Goalie, Chioma, all I can say is.. AMAZING! She is what you call a true hard working freshman. She come to work hard.. day in and day out. To get this award this early in her soccer career will definitely bring more confidence to her." said coach Fontenot #proudcoach 

SWAC Offensive Player of the Week – Carmichael: The 5’5 sophomore from Houston, Texas scored what was a game-tying goal at the 77th minute during the Bison’s match versus Longwood. Carmichael’s mark nearly helped Howard overcome a 3-0 deficit to the Lancers and was her first score of the season. Carmichael also logged a season-high in minutes played during the match (39).
