As the Deputy Athletic Director at Southern University, Dr. Trayvean Scott is responsible for the daily operations of SU’s athletic program. Scott currently serves as the sport administrator for Football, Women’s Basketball, Softball, and Men & Women’s Track & Field (Indoor & Outdoor), and Men & Women’s Cross Country while overseeing NCAA Compliance, Student-Athlete Support Services, Academics, Student-Athlete Development, as well as the Strength & Conditioning program. Scott is also responsible for football game scheduling. He serves as a member of the athletics department's senior staff, and previously served as Southern’s Executive Athletic Director.
Throughout his professional career, Scott has been active on the university, conference, and national levels. Scott is a 2016 graduate of the prestigious NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minorities, a 2018 graduate of the Sports Management Institute (SMI), and has facilitated the NCAA’s Career in Sports Forum in 2016 while also serving as a member of the selection committee. Scott is currently a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Association of Academic & Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A), the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA), and the National Association of Athletic Development Professionals (NAADD) where he was the Diversity Initiative recipient in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
During his time at Southern, Dr. Scott has spearheaded an unprecedented academic recovery of Southern Athletics as it relates to the Academic Progress Rate, making a dramatic improvement from 3 to all 15 programs meeting the APR benchmarks earning post-season access after just two full years in charge. Scott has also guided the institution through the successful completion of the NCAA Data Review process and served as the author and principal investigator of the $900,000 NCAA AASP Grant. To date, Scott has written more than $2 million in grants to support academic and student development initiatives for Southern Athletics.
As the senior athletic compliance official, Dr. Scott oversees all 15 athletic programs. Scott is in charge of the development and installation of new compliance systems and software and providing rules education to coaches and administrators. Additionally, Scott supervises the monitoring of CARA logs, complimentary admissions, recruiting activities, monitoring squad lists, athletic scholarship limits, student-athlete employment, camps and clinics, the National Letter of Intent Program (NLI) and the athletic eligibility certification process.
Scott also serves as the Executive Director of the newly renovated Student-Athlete Development Center. In this capacity, he also provides direct oversight of the areas which includes academic services, student-athlete support services, student-athlete development & welfare, career development, leadership development & Retention, and social responsibility programming.
A former standout basketball student-athlete, four-year starter, and team captain at Southern, Scott remains atop the schools record books in assist, steals, and minutes played. After his collegiate playing career was over, Scott enjoyed a successful career in financial services until returning to the Bluff in 2011.
Outside of athletics administration, Scott is an adjunct faculty member in the College of Business at Southern where he teaches courses in Business Administration, Management, and Sports Marketing. He holds bachelors in Marketing (2003) & Management (2005) and a Master’s Degree in Communications (2005) from Southern University. He also recently completed his PhD in Education/Sport Management from Northcentral University (2018).
Scott and wife Raynhea are the parents of two sons, Trayvean, II (6) and Traylon (3).
