MONTGOMERY, Ala. | A huge six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning propels the Southern University Jaguars over the #1 seed Alcorn State University Lady Braves Wednesday night at the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Softball Tournament at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on the campus of Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama.
This is the second time in back-to-back seasons Southern pulled the upset over #1 seed, Alcorn State.
The Jaguars scored first after starting pitcher Robin Harrison gave up a single, a walk and hit two batters for the first score of the game.
The Lady Braves answered back in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at one-apiece.
After, an uneventful second inning, First-team All-SWAC selection Kiara Suttles hit a liner to deep right centerfield for a lead-off double to kick off the top of the third inning. Suttles advanced to third base on a sacrifice-bunt from Elizabeth Donaldson. Senior Jamani Greer sent a pitch back at the pitcher for a RBI single to extend the lead, 2-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, Southern extended the lead on a Scarlett Brock single to centerfield to score Aubrion James.
After, giving up the one run in the bottom of the first inning, Aubrion James held the Lady Braves in check over the next four and two-thirds innings before the bottom fell out. Alcorn State rocked James for five runs and reliever Tiara Scott for two before James returned and ended the inning. The damage was done Alcorn scored seven runs on seven hits to take a commanding lead, 7-3.
The Jaguars put up a fight in the top of the seventh inning, as Sydney Andrews and Kiara Suttles had back-to-back singles, and Jamani Greer belted a two-run triple to get within three. Jazmine Dukes hit a towering homerun that snuck over the left field wall to bring the Jaguars to within one. After Aubrion James reached via error, Tiara Scott singled her home, and Scarlett Brock handed Southern the lead with a go-ahead RBI single to right field.
Alcorn had one more chance with one out as James surrender a walk and single to third base. The Jaguars recovered to close out the game with consecutive fielder's choices.
Greer was 2-for-2 with three RBI, and Suttles went 2-for-4 with two runs. James picked up the win the hard way, with her 12 complete game, scattering 10 hits and six runs to improve to a career-high 11 wins.
