HOUSTON -- Senior Brianna Green scored a career-high 31 points to lead Southern University past Prairie View A&M 84-76, Friday afternoon at the Delmar Fieldhouse in the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament in Houston, Texas.

Southern blitzed the Lady Panthers out the gate scoring within five seconds of the game, the Jaguars used the momentum to jump out to a 12-6 lead with six and half minutes left in the first quarter.

Prairie View settled in, tying the score at 12 on a Talisha Presley jumper with five minutes left in the first quarter. Southern ended the quarter on a 20-7 run to take a 32-19 lead into the second quarter. Briana Green was on fire in the first quarter, scoring 15 points and shooting 7-of-11 from the floor.

The second half the Lady Panthers came alive, outscoring the Jaguars 22-10. PVAMU shot 41.2 percent from the floor while SU shot 25 percent in the second quarter. After the hot start, Green went 0-for-4 in the quarter.

It was all about defense in the third quarter both squads shot 33 percent from the floor. The difference was from the charity strip PVAMU shot 7-of-9 while SU shot 5-of-8.

Prairie View took a 58-57 lead into the decisive fourth quarter.

Southern tied the game at 62 on a Tiamya Butler free-throw with eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter. SU went on a 13-6 run cemented on Green's coast-to-coast layup to extend the lead 75-68.

Prairie View brought the game to within three points with a minute to go on a Dominique Newman jumper from the paint, two of her team-high 27 points to close the gap 77-74.

Southern went 7-4 over the last minute to defeat Prairie View 86-76, and earn a trip to the Southwestern Athletic Conference finals Saturday, versus Grambling State, who edged Texas Southern 66-59 Friday evening.

The Jags' senior Samantha Duncan and freshmen Alyric Scott scored in double-figures with 13 and 10 points respectively. Green ended the day with a career-high 31 points, eight points, five assists, and three steals.

Head Coach Sandy Pugh recorded her twenty-fourth SWAC tournament win, second all-time in SWAC post-season play.
