Men's Basketball opens SWAC play at TSU on ESPNU

HOUSTON, TX -- Southern University Jaguars and Texas Southern University Tigers will open Southwestern Athletic Conference play Monday night on ESPNU at the HP&E Arena in Houston, Texas.
The game will tip-off at 8 pm.
First-year head coach Morris Scott Southern led squad heads to third ward Texas to dethrone the defending SWAC champions, Texas Southern. TSU goes into Monday night home-opener riding a 23 game home win streak, their last loss came at the hands of arch-rivals Prairie View A&M 58-55 on February 7, 2015. Southern last won in the HP&E Arena January 6, 2014, the Jags' Calvin Godfrey scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the 79-71 victory.
The Jaguars like their counterpart has found the road to be difficult this season, losing all their road games to start the season.
Southern was swept last season by the Tigers.
The Jags last defeated Texas Southern 81-73, in the finals of the 2016 SWAC Tournament to take a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
SU is led by preseason first-team All-SWAC selection, Senior Jared Sam, scoring 21 points versus Illinois, Marshall and Baylor averaging 15.5 points a game this season.
Sam has recorded four double-doubles so far this season, he is a double-double from tying a career high.
Sidney Umude a mid-year transfer last season, joined the line up versus Florida A&M and is averaging 12.3 points, and 17.7 minutes.
De'Rias Johnson (Dallas), Sidney Umude (San Antonio), and Jamar Sandifer (Dallas) return to Texas for the second time this season since playing Baylor December 20.
Texas Southern played a tough non-conference, opening the season versus Gonzaga, Washington State, Ohio State, Syracuse, Kansas, Clemson, and Oakland. The 0-13 start is the worst start under the Mike Davis era.
TSU is led by explosive guard Demontrae Jefferson who leads the league in scoring averaging 23.4 points a game and Trayvon Reed who leads the SWAC in rebounds averaging 9 rebounds a game.
Southern and Texas Southern has sat atop the league standings the last five season.
