Full slate of games on tap for Southern Athletics
Southern University Lady Jaguars Soccer program kicks off a busy weekend for Jaguars athletics. Southern’s women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's cross country, and football teams all head on the road for competition.
Soccer (0-3-0) will head down I-10 to face in-state foe McNeese State University (2-2-1), first touch scheduled for 7 p.m. The Lady Jaguars is coming off an impressive showing at Southeastern this past Friday, dropping a 1-0 thriller at Strawberry Field, in Hammond. The Lady Lions struck first at the 3:30 mark to take a 1-0 lead. After a stoppage in play due to an injury to SU goalkeeper Nickesha Williamson, the defense clamped down led by reserve goalkeeper Kendra Lewis, Jessica Guiterrez and Desi George-McCool held SELU to eight shots the rest of the half, three of those on goal. The thriller came in the second half; Southern had several opportunities to tie the game, out shooting the Lady Lions nine to eight.
The Lady Jags looks to bring that momentum to Lake Charles. McNeese leads the overall series 6-0, including a 6-1 win last season on the bluff.
Volleyball (0-3) travels to Conway, Ark. to compete in the UCA Volleyball Classic at the Farris Center. The Lady Jaguars will face the University of Central Arkansas, Arkansas State University and University of Central Florida during the two-day Tournament starting Friday, September 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Friday’s match will be Southern’s first match since falling to McNeese State 3-0 August 26 in the UTA Invitational. Due to Hurricane Harvey, four of SU games were canceled last week.
Football (1-0) travels to Hattiesburg, Miss. to face University of Southern Mississippi (0-1) at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m.
Southern is coming off an exhilarating win over MEAC foe South Carolina State University. The Jags defense held the Bulldogs to 0-10 on third downs and held them from scoring a touchdown, highlighted a monster defensive performance. SU's bend-but-don't-break defense accounted for two forced fumbles and an interception, winning the turnover battle and not allowing an offensive touchdown. Southern Miss dropped their home opener to the University of Kentucky 24-17 this past Saturday. This weekend’s game will be the first-ever matchup between the Golden Eagles and the Jaguars. Stadium will handle broadcasting the FBS versus FCS matchup on its website at watchstadium.com.
