NEW ORLEANS -- John Pope recorded two hits and three RBI while starting pitcher Jacob Snyder scattered six hits in Southern University's 6-2 win over Alabama A&M in an elimination game at the 2017 SWAC Baseball Tournament.
The Jaguars (17-26) advance to face the loser of the Jackson State-Texas Southern game Thursday at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs season concludes with a 12-45 record.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Phillip Williams RBI single tied the game before Pope delivered a two RBI double with two outs. Pope helped Southern extend its lead to 6-2 in the ninth when the junior lined a bases-loaded single that scored Williams and Jayveayan Williams.
Meanwhile, Snyder (4-2), who serves as the Jaguars mid-week ace, tossed seven complete innings and confused the Alabama A&M hitters allowing two runs on six hits. After yielding runs in the second and the third, Snyder pitched four shutout innings before freshman reliever Whilhelm Allen entered in the seventh and picked up the save.
During the tournament, Southern has shutout its opponents in 14 of the 17 total innings played. The Jaguars posted 10 hits with five Jaguars registering extra base hits.
