Since Sandy Pugh's arrival in 2000, Southern University Women's Basketball has ascended to become one of the most storied programs in the State of Louisiana and the SWAC conference. During a stellar career that spans 12 years, Southern Women's Basketball has provided the Jaguar Nation with years of pride, boasting the conference's first and only WNBA draft pick in 2002, four NCAA first round Appearances, two WNIT post season appearances and numerous individual and coach of the year accolades.

Pugh is no stranger to setting and exceeding high standards as a head coach. From 1996-2000, Pugh led the women's basketball program at Meridian Community College where her teams boasted a 76-19 overall record. With Pugh's guidance and signature 2-spread offense, MMCC won the Region 23 twice earning two trips to the NJCAA national division I tournament in Salina, Kan. and winning the consolation bracket finishing sixth out of 16.

A 2010 Northwestern State Hall of Fame inductee, Pugh was named the Gulf Star Most Valuable Player in 1987, where she registered the sixth highest single season record for point. and As a two-time Louisiana All-State selection at Lakeview, Pugh won two state titles played for one of the all-time winningest Coaches in Louisiana History, Emma Boozman (Natchitoches Central).

Coach Pugh knows how to "win." And like most of the great ones she is known for her development of players and her leadership while maintaining the air of the "consummate professional." Her players and staff know her to be a disciplinarian and a tough competitor with a deeply compassionate temperament.

During her 12-year tenure, no other coach in the SWAC has been as durable or dominant. Pugh credits her inate ability to "make things work" regardless of resource limitations.

After finishing second in 2011-12, while balancing the duties as Southern's Interim Athletics Director, Pugh has proven  there is nothing she can't accomplish. From spearheading the efforts to hire Southern men's basketball coach, Roman Bank - a NSU 2012 Hall of Fame inductee and son of SU hoops legend Cleophus Banks, to the first-ever female strength and conditioning coach at Southern, Pugh has also proven herself as capable multitasker.

In April 2012, Pugh relinquished her duties as Interim and now concentrates 100 percent of her efforts on basketball and the next five years. Southern University Alumni and fans alike can rest assured that Southern was and is in great hands due to the efforts of Sandy Pugh. And the Jaguar Nation can rest assured that future traditions and successes are firmly in the hands of one the best coaches college basketball has to offer.
