Rodney Kirschner
Assistant to the Head Coach

Rodney Kirschner begins his sixth season with the Southern University men's basketball team in 2016-17 as Assistant to the Head Coach. “Coach K” as he is known around the program is an integral part of Southern success with his tireless work ethic and attention to detail. Kirschner’s responsibilities include handling day-to-day operations for the men's basketball program.  He overseas academics, equipment, apparel, practice planning, game scheduling, scouting, team travel, film and video breakdown, film exchange coordinator, liaison for housing, community outreach, budget, compliance matters, handles the annual basketball awards banquet and serves as the camp director.

Before Kirschner arrival, Southern had a 17-74 record and the three worst seasons in program history and an RPI rating of 340. During his first season he aided one of the largest turnarounds in Division 1.  While on APR sanctions, scholarship and practice time reduction Kirschner helped guide the Jaguars to a 17-14 second place finish in the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season and an RPI rating of 280. They finished with a 9-2 home record during the 2011-12 season.

During his second season the Jags got off to a 1-5 start, but then went on a 15-2 run in their next 17 games, including a 53-51 victory over Texas A&M in College Station on Dec. 22, 2012. Kirschner once again played an integral part in the team’s success as he helped guide the Jags to a 23-10 overall record and second place finish in the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season.  The Jags claimed the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament where Southern came close to pulling off the biggest upset in tournament history over Gonzaga who was the No. 1 overall seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament and No.1 seed in the West Region.  Gonzaga narrowly defeated the 16th-seeded Jaguars, 64-58, in the first round. Southern finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record at home during the 2012-13 season, its most wins (23) since the 1989-90 season and second among Division I schools in field goal defense (36.7 percent) and 12th in scoring defense (57.3 points per game).  SU finished with an RPI rating of 180. Coach K aided with the development of guard Derick Beltran First Team All Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), First Team All Louisiana Sports Writer Association (LSWA), Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) All Tournament Team and MVP, First Team HBCU All-American, and the First Southern Player to win the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches (LABC) Major College Player of the Year Award and Malcolm Miller First Team All Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Newcomer of the Year, Third Team All Louisiana Sports Writer Association (LSWA), Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) All Tournament Team, Second Team HBCU All-American.

During the 2013-14 seasons Kirschner helped guide the Jags to 19-13 overall record, 15-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play in which the Jags claimed the 2014 SWAC Regular Season Championship.  The Jaguars ranked in the top 50 nationally in four categories. No. 2 nationally in FG. Percentage defense (37.3%) No. 27 nationally in scoring defense (62.7 ppg) No. 42 nationally in scoring margin (8.5 average margin) No. 45 nationally in blocks per game (4.9 average margin).  SU finished with an RPI rating of 176.  Coach K aided with the development of Malcolm Miller, First Team All Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Calvin Godfrey First Team All Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year along with Tre’lun Banks Southwestern Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.

Prior to arriving at Southern, Kirschner spent five seasons at two Southland Conference schools. Three seasons (2008-11) as the Director of Video Operations at Northwestern State University (Natchitoches, LA), and two seasons (2006-08) as the Video Coordinator at Southeastern Louisiana University (Hammond, LA.) Before joining the college ranks he was an assistant coach at Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge, LA (2004-06.)  While at WHS he helped guide the Panthers to a 64-14 record in two seasons, a district championship and a 2006 class 5A state runner-up finish.

He started his college playing career at Pratt Community College, and then transferred to Kansas Wesleyan University where he finished his career as a three-year letterman at KWU and was a part of the 2002 KCAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Runner-up Team. Kirschner earned a bachelor's degree in General Studies from Southeastern Louisiana University in May of 2008.

A Hutchinson, Kansas native he played for his father Rod at Nickerson High School. While at NHS he set the school’s single game record for most points with 48 during his senior campaign and finished his high school career with over 1,800 career points in which he scored over 30 points in a game 25 times. He was a three time all Kansas All-State pick and First Team All-State pick his senior season. His parents, Rod and Jane Kirschner reside in Baton Rouge, LA. His father has been in the coaching profession for 42 seasons on both the High School and Collegiate level.  He married the former Courtney Tegtman of Stamford, NE and the couple resides in Baton Rouge, LA with their two dogs.
