Football Coaching Staff

Elvis Joseph is in his 6th year serving as the running backs coach, at Southern University. He has had the opportunity to work with Coach Pete Richardson, Coach Stump Mitchell and now Coach Dawson Odums. 

Joseph comes to Southern after a 3-year NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, as well as playing a year with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL.

A native of New Orleans, Joseph transferred to Southern in his senior year, from UL-Lafayette (where he garnered All-Louisiana Freshman of Year honors) and led the SU Jaguars in rushing with 588 yards on 137 carries, while scoring eight touchdowns.

After signing a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Joseph quickly made a name for himself in the NFL, going from an undrafted free agent running back to the starting running back by the 3rd game of the season. Joseph made his mark that season by finishing second in kickoff returns, with 17 for 428 yards and one score - a 95-yard return for a touchdown versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, being the 2nd leading rusher on the team and. In 2002, he led the Jags in kickoff returns with 27 for 562 yards (20.8 avg), and also recorded seven solo tackles on Jacksonville's special teams units. During the 2003 season Joseph suffered a hamstring injury that sent him to the sidelines. He emerged again in 2005 with the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian football League. Joseph recorded 22 rushes for 91 yards and 12 receptions for 149 yards.

After his professional playing career was complete, Joseph had the opportunity to return to his alma mater under Coach Richardson. In 2007, where he coached Darren Coates who led the team in rushing yards and receptions. Darren Coates was also the Bayou Classic MVP and awarded an opportunity to participate in a NFL training camp. Joseph have also coached Lenard Tillery who finish the season with 784 yards and 9 touchdowns in the 2013 season. Tillery was named to the 2014 preseason All Swac team. Joseph is an excellent recruiter that does a great job recruiting the southeast region. Joseph has recruited numerous All Swac and All American selections. He also serves as the pro liason and walk-ons coordinator for the Jaguars football team. Joseph has participated in numerous professional development programs with the Jacksonville Jaguars scouting department. He also participated in the Bill Walsh Minority Internship with the Indianapolis Colts. Joseph is a proud member of the AFCA coaches association and the NFLPA.

Elvis Joseph received his bachelor degree in Criminal Justice in 2007.

Elvis is married to Trenice Joseph and is also the proud father of three beautiful daughters Taylor, Mackenzie and Evan.
