Baton Rouge, LA | The Southern University Men's and Women's track and field team will open up their 2019 indoor season at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational on January 12, 2019, in Houston, Texas.
The meet will kickoff at 11:00 am with the Men’s and Women’s weight throw. The first track event is set for 1:30 pm with the Women’s distance medley relay. Live Stats will be available at uhcougars.com.
Thrower, Faith Estelle, returns after finishing top 5 overall on the SWAC performance list. Estelle, recorded a personal record in 2018 of 51’ 7.25. Estelle is the only senior thrower for the women and will have to fill some pretty big shoes to fill behind Jamira Russ. Russ, who won the weight throw at the SWAC indoor championship in 2018, with a throw of 62' 9.25”.
Despite the men's team not being able to compete in the SWAC indoor or outdoor championships last season, That men earned top position on the SWAC performance list.
Senior, Isaac Brown, returns after finishing eighth on the SWAC Performance list last year, running a time of 1:54.74. Brown is looking to finish in the top three this year in both the indoor and outdoor season.
Junior Jeremey Bass, returns with a weight throw of 50' 1.25”. Also, throwing 46' 5.25" in the shot put. Which placed him sixth on the SWAC performance list for both throws.
Head Coach Teremine White enters his fifth year leading the Men and Women's track program at Southern University. With two assistants, coach Charmaine Darden and the newest addition to the staff, coach Freddie Glover, who will oversee all sprints and jumpers.
Under coach White the program has rebounded from scholarship reductions due to NCAA APR penalties and are eager to start the 2019 season facing no restrictions on scholarships or post season competition. White says, "I'm looking forward to having someone in every event this year on both the men and women's side because at the end of the day that will help win SWAC."
